Rhetorical Manipulation: UFO’s

January 15, 2008

So this is the type of thing my brain thinks about when ever I’m not paying attention to the outside world.

I came across this article on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/14/ufo.sightings.ap/index.html

And it made me think… First things first, the term UFO as most of us may (or may not) know stands for Unidentified Flying Object. Technically, if I were to throw a rock through the air, and you were to see it, but didn’t know it was a rock. It meets the criteria:

  1. Unidentified – You didn’t know it was a rock.
  2. Flying – I through it through the air, so for however brief a moment, it was flying.
  3. Object – Its a rock… Last I checked, that was an object.

My friends, you just witnessed a UFO.

The term is very referential and requires a certain perspective to be applicable. So, take for instance the being(s) that were flying the aircraft that is referenced in that article… To them (whatever planet they may be from) that aircraft is not a UFO. It’s perfectly identifiable to them.

Further more, I love the fact that every time there is a UFO siting, it just happens to occur in some remote area of the country, where, generally speaking we as a culture perceive its inhabitants to be well… I’ll just say it… STUPID! Then to back up our bigoted assumptions, the article gets quotes from people who defend the stereotypes:

“You hear about big bass or big buck in the area, but this is a different deal”

This creates a nice sense that this guy doesn’t read much, and that killing stuff is cool.

Its no secret that our government keeps secrets. So wouldn’t it stand to reason that the UFO mentioned in this article could be some experimental government project, after all they are near an airforce base.
